School bus drivers have a very challenging job. Can you imagine keeping one eye on the snow-covered road and traffic all around your vehicle and the other eye on 40 to 50 students who are excited to be out of school for the day? Now imagine that you are responsible not only for driving the vehicle safely but also, for the physical and emotional safety of each of those riders. Despite the challenges, according to the National Safety Council, school buses are the safest form of ground transportation. As a matter of fact, school buses are about 40 times safer than the family car.

The State of Wisconsin has declared the week of February 8th through 12th as School Bus Drivers Recognition Week. The week is highlighted each year to recognize the commitment to safety excellence of over 15,000 Wisconsin school bus drivers, who drive over 82 million miles each year and transport over 600,000 students on any given school day. Kobussen Buses, LTD, will be recognizing drivers and attendants who work with students from the Richland School District, including St Mary and Eagle Schools.

Bev Laue, terminal manager for Kobussen Richland Center office says, “We are planning a full week of activities to celebrate the outstanding job that our drivers and attendants do each and every day.” These activities will include such things as free lunch, door prizes and recognition of perfect attendance.

The public is urged to join Kobussen in taking time to thank the drivers and attendants for all that they do and to think about what we can all do to help students be safe.

Dan Kobussen from Kobussen’s main office in Kaukauna, says you may wonder what you can do to help the safety of students who ride buses. said, “If other drivers would just slow down, give buses a little extra space and be prepared to stop when the flashing red lights come on, that would help everyone out.”
