Answer: False!  Baseball was rough back then… but not “dodgeball with spikes” rough. That rule disappeared long before Babe Ruth started launching baseballs into orbit.

In some very early forms of baseball before modern rules, fielders could get runners out by hitting them with the ball. It was called “soaking” or “plugging.” By the time Babe Ruth played in the Major Leagues, that rule was long gone.
