MADISON, Wis. (Civic Media) – Wisconsin Democrats launched a new campaign today to call out Republicans who plan to vote to impeach Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz.
The Defend Justice Campaign will invest $4 million in television and web ads, door knocking campaigns, and a website to track where every Republican stands on impeachment.
Protasiewicz was sworn in last month, and a lawsuit challenging Wisconsin’s legislative maps was filed the next day. Protasiewicz had called the maps “rigged” during her campaign earlier this year, comments that Republicans say should force her to recuse herself from the case.
Top state Republicans have said that, if Protasiewicz does not recuse herself from the redistricting case, they would look at impeaching the Justice.
Yesterday, the state’s Judicial Commission, which investigates ethics complaints against Supreme Court Justices, released a letter saying they had cleared Protasiewicz of two complaints against her comments.
At a press conference on Wednesday, chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party Ben Wikler said that moving forward with impeachment of Protasiewicz would be political suicide. He added that the aim of the campaign is to inform voters of where Republicans stand on impeaching Protasiewicz.
Assembly Minority Leader Greta Neubauer (D-Racine) added that impeaching Protasiewicz would effectively throw out the votes of everyone who voted for the Justice last April.
In a press release, GOP Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said that the campaign is just further proof of Protasiewicz’s ties to the Democratic Party, and that he still fully expects her to recuse herself in the redistricting case.
