TOWN OF EXCELSIOR (Sauk County, Wis.) (WMDX) – A student is dead after being hit by a truck while the student was waiting to get on board a school bus in Sauk County Friday.

According to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, the student was outside of the bus when they were hit by the pickup truck, which tried to swerve around the school bus to avoid hitting it.

The driver of the truck was going too fast to slow down behind the stopped bus, swiping the rear right side of the bus before going across a driveway and hitting the student. The truck stopped once it went into the ditch, according to a release.

First responders weren’t able to save the student’s life. The student died at the scene. The pickup truck driver had minor injuries. No one on the bus, which was carrying other students, was hurt in the crash.

The crash happened on Highway 23/33 near Northwoods Drive in the Town of Excelsior, about three miles east of Reedsburg, at 7:33 a.m. Friday.

After the crash, the students that were on the bus were taken back to their families. The School District of Reedsburg is offering resources for students for support. The District also postponed or cancelled all athletic events Friday and Saturday. A letter to families said that the student attended Webb Middle School.

The crash is under investigation. Anyone with information about the crash can reach the Sheriff’s Office or call 1-888-TIP-SAUK (847-7285).

The names of the pickup truck driver and the student are being withheld pending notification of family, Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister said.
